Playlist 12/9/07

It's back. Russian Roulette is back. Overall, though, there were few missteps this week. Duran Duran, EMF, and The Human League to be sure. I am thinking of a way to create a database of these songs so that I can do less work each week, but I haven't gotten it clearly organized mentally yet. I currently have each song rated, and I am working on the album and year and notes. There may yet be a more efficient way to post this information.

Otherwise, here is the playlist. Overall rating: 3.37

Playlist - 12/2/07

Here is the playlist from Sirius' Dark Wave show on Channel 22 hosted by Christopher the Minister. There were some good parts, and, as usual, some pretty bad ones. There was a great run in the beginning of the show where he had an early New Order song followed by early Cure, The Sisters of Mercy, and Peter Murphy. But what the hell is Kate Bush doing in there? There were a couple of more questionably non-dark wave songs like Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Oingo Boingo, and The Human League. Pretty good rating this week - 3.17 but there is still a lot of room for improvement.

Camouflage Love is a Shield
New Order Ceremony
The Cure A Forest (tree mix)
The Sisters of Mercy Detonation Boulevard
Peter Murphy Indigo Eyes
Shreikback Nemesis
The Smiths Back to the Old House
Ministry Revenge
Depeche Mode Stripped
Oingo Boingo When the Lights Go Out

Playlist, 11/25/07

Remarkably, Christopher the Minister did not play Russian Roulette this week. This was undone by his playing of two songs by Duran Duran from their Rio album. I am not sure if Joe Strummer counts as Dark Wave, and I really just can't stand the song Golden Brown by the Stranglers. I remember being mesmerized by it the first time I heard it, but there is no way it counts as Dark. On the bright end of things, he had a really great run in the first hour where he played Bauhaus, Mission UK, and Sisters of Mercy back to back to back.. I really don't think that songs that are regularly played on First Wave should be heard on this show. Hence, Echo and the Bunnymen's People are Strange received a 2. The ratings are completely arbitrary, by the way. I am trying to cross-reference them, but I haven't figured out a great system for that just yet.

Here's the playlist for November 25, 2007.
Nine Inch Nails Something I Can Never Have 5

Playlist 11/18/07

I missed a few weeks. My apologies. I am trying to create a "darkness factor" for each show, so I will begin posting the playlist with these numbers. I have worked out in my head that Sisters of Mercy are pretty much a 5 and that New Order songs like 1963 that are on 22 regularly are 1s. There could be songs lower (i.e., B-52s Love Shack). But here are the songs for this week. There were some highlights and lowlights, but RUSSIAN ROULETTE WAS THERE AGAIN!!! Seriously, Christopher, knock it off.

Artist Song Dark Rating
The Sisters of Mercy First and Last and Always 4.5
Echo & The Bunnymen Bedbugs and Ballyhoo 2
The Smiths Meat is Murder 3

Playlist 10/21/07

Using a simple 5 point ranking system, I rated the songs and did an average to see how "dark" this week's show was. My results - 3.2 out of 5. Not bad, but room for improvement. Christopher reiterated that Siouxsie Sioux will be hosting on October 28. Can't wait to see what she plays on Sunday night.

Some bands that I like that are missing from these playlists:

Mission Statement

I grew up in the 80s but Pop music was never my thing. I enjoyed listening to dark alternative and progressive music. When Sirius Satellite radio announced that they would do a three hour show each Sunday night, I was elated. I didn't get to listen too often because the show came on late (10 - 1). Then I bought the Stiletto and it can record shows. I have been listening each week now. While listening, I have found that Christopher the Minister, the current DJ, plays the same bands and songs each week. This blog will present alternatives, accept suggestions, and produce a weekly playlist. I am working on creating a rating system for the level of darkness that the show contains. The goal of this blog is to help make the Dark Wave show the best of the best on a weekly basis.

Christopher plays one Lords of the New Church song just about each week, and that is what inspired the title of this blog. There have to be more songs by them than just Russian Roulette (even though its a good song).

Things I wish:
More diverse bands.
More diverse songs.
Playlists posted online somewhere.
Other band profiles

NOTE: I have some back dated playlists that I will start with. Then we will move forward
